I'm

About

I am an innovative and deadline-driven researcher, BioImage Analyst, Maker, Teacher, Mentor, and Photographer. In science, I focus on medical signal and image processing, 4+ years of experience in BioImage Analysis, and 7+ years of experience in teaching at the university level. My focus is BioImage Analysis and biomedical signal and image analysis. Check out the Czech BioImage Analysts’ Society or my handpicked BiA resources and newsletter. I apply Open Science principles both in my research and as part of image analysis service in open access microscopy core facility. I enjoy making new digital things (check my GitHub) and also 3D design and printing. I enjoyed photography from an early age and it led me to also be interested in graphic design and later image processing and analysis. I believe there has to be a bit of art in all forms learning process - so the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math (STEAM) combination makes a lot of sense to me.

Education

Doctoral degree in Technical Cybernetics

2015 - 2021

University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, CZ

The topic of my dissertation thesis was to use a depth sensor for breathing analysis during sleep and sleep apnea detection. This procedure is usually done in a sleep laboratory where the patient sleeps overnight connected to a set of measurement devices (EEG, EKG, EMG, SpO2, belt over abdomen, belt over chest, Thermistor under nose) and is supposed to sleep as if he or she would at home. The goal of this research was to test and leverage the possibility of contactless breathing monitoring for sleep disorders detection.

To evaluate the practical usefulness of contactless breathing monitoring a set of recordings was made in UHHK, together with manually classified Polysomnography records. Part of the research was to test more versions of depth sensors, with optimized processing methods for parallel processing, better data formats, and feature extractions. The contactless Breathing Analysisem> and Sleep Apnea detectionem> are in a stage where they can function as a plug-and-play tool. It can work as a home sensor that can help diagnose and monitor Sleep Apnea, or as a contactless breathing monitoring tool in any other medical application.

Master degree in Engineering Informatics

2013 - 2015

University of Chemistry and Technology in Prague, CZ

The topic of my Master's Thesis was to do a pilot study for contactless breathing detection and monitoring using depth sensor MS Kinect. The results were proof of concept and base for my Dissertation Thesis.

Projects

I am involved in other projects that are more focused on creativity, art, sustainability, and helping others rather than research or work. However, some of them are still quite connected to science or my workplaces.

Mentoring at UCT Prague is not only about exchanging experiences in the main field, but it is often useful to find an expert in an area that the mentee does not understand so well – it offers a unique opportunity to get a better orientation in a related field or perhaps to find out how to implement the business side of a scientific project.

The art group Tlustá čára aims to use its work to point out topics that are neglected in society, and at the same time to integrate people from the social sphere into their work - people with addictions, homeless people, people from asylums, former prisoners, victims of crimes, etc. People who are often excluded by society and are denied the possibility of creation or self-expression. The Tlustá čára provides such people with a background, a community, and motivation to make a difference. The Tlustá čára has embraced the idea of "art for people" and wants to help as much as possible through art. With its projects, it responds to the current situation and current needs of people not only those in need.

The group stands on three main pillars. The first one is the community. We create a community of people that encourages active society and volunteering. Another pillar is networking. We connect people from different walks of life with artists and experts who specialize in our chosen topic. Thanks to this, we educate and spread awareness to the general public. The third pillar is the integration of people from the margins of society. We help them get involved in everyday life and intensively point out this issue.

The Maker Institute was established based on the interest of students and employees of the Dejvice Campus in cutting-edge fabrication technologies.

The Maker Institute is a nonprofit organization, functioning independently but working closely with the universities and other stakeholders.

The purpose of the institute is to offer an inspiring, vibrant, and innovative environment – a true hot spot for makers, tinkerers, and innovators of different backgrounds and skills.

These impulses led to a joint project under the umbrella of Campus Dejvice with Leyla Yunis as a Director and Dana Matějovská (Institute of Model Design, FA ČVUT) and Richard Nevšímal (Counselling and Career Centre, Department of Communication, VŠCHT) in the Board of Directors.

The Czech BioImage Analysts’ Society (CzechBIAS) is a freely formed society for anyone interested in BioImage Analysis. It aims to associate BioImage Analysts so they can discuss and share experiences and tools. It was created in 2023 with the ideology of NEUBIAS and its successor in mind, and SwissBIAS as an inspiration.

This is a community effort driven by all members, with flexible degrees of involvement: If there is something you would like to see done, the fastest way may well be to just do it.
